‘Abdur Rahman bin’ Amr As Sulami narrates from ‘Utbah bin’ Abd As Sulami that one person asked RasoolAllah ﷺ “O the Messenger of Allah ﷺ How was your earlier life?” He ﷺ replied to that ” My foster mother was a woman of Banu Sa’d bin Bakr, I and his son took her cattle for herding and we didn’t take food with us. I said to him ” O my brother, go home and ask our mother for lunch. My brother went and I stayed with the herd to guard them. then suddenly two white birds came looking as if eagles. One of them from the eagle said to the other “Is he the one?” another Answered “Yes!” then both of them surrounded me and caught hold of me and made me lie flat. They cut open my back and took out my heart and washed it. They they took out two black lumps from my heart and one of them said to the other ” Bring me snow water” then he washed my chest with that water then he said “Bring me cold water” and he washed my heart with that and then he said ” Bring me Sakinah ( tranquility )!” Then he sprinkled it on my heart then one of them said to the other “Seal his heart”, so the other sealed it and placed the mark of Prophethood. Then one of them said to the other “Put him on one side of the scale and put a thousand people of his Ummah on the other.” At that time I saw one thousand people over me and I feared some of them would fall over me” then the eagle said ” If all of his Ummah is measured against him he will surely weigh more than them” then they left me. RasoolAllah ﷺ said ” I felt very scared and I went to see my mother, I told her about all what happened, she felt scared and felt that something happened/caught hold of me. Then she said ” May Allah protect you, then she prepared a camel and made me sit on the front and she herself sat on the back and she rode until we reached my real mother’s place” she said to my mother ” I have given you back your trust and fulfilled my obligation” and narrated all that which I told her and my mother didn’t seem scared and told her ” At the time when I gave birth to him I saw such noor (light) that I saw all the houses (or palaces) of Sham being illuminated. “

Grade: Da’if.

( Chapter on the state of RasoolAllah before prophethood , Volume 1, Hadith No.13 Sunan Daarmi )

Note: Even though the above said hadith is da’if due to Baqiyyah bin Waleed, but there are similar hadith in Musnad Ahmad 184/4, Mustadrak Hakim 4230 and Tabrani 322 which are all Sahih as they don’t contain Baqiyyah bin Waleed in the sanad. Hence this incident really did happen.
