Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him):

The Messenger of Allah () went out in a war against the mushriks (polytheists). My father Abdullah (bin Amr) told me, “O Jabir, it is important for you that you do not go to war and take care of the people of Madinah until you come to know what has happened to us. By Allah! If I had not feared that so many daughters would be rendered without a guardian (after my death), then surely I would like that you went to war and saw you being martyred in front of my eyes “.

Jabir said, “While I was with the people whose job was to monitor , I saw my aunt(paternal) bring the bodies of my father and uncle (maternal) to bury them in our graveyard.  At that time I met a man making announcement “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) has ordered you to return the bodies of the dead and bury them where they were killed.” We returned their bodies and buried them at the same place where they were killed.

During the Khilafat (reign) of Mu’awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan رضي الله عنه‎ , a man came to me and said, ” O Jabir bin Abdullah ! The servants of Muawiya have dug up your father’s grave and his body is visible.” I went towards that grave and I found my father just as I had buried him. There was no deformity except that which he suffered when he was killed.

Jabir said, “Then I buried my father and my father left a debt in the form of dates. Some lenders started pushing me to repay that loan so I went to RasoolAllah and said ” O The Messenger of Allah! My father martyred on فُلان (placeholder) day and left a debt in the form of dates, so the creditors are pushing me to pay off the debt (immediately). I want you to help me with this, so that they can give me respite until the next harvest. RasoolAllah said ” Close to afternoon I will come to you InshaAllah”.

Jabir said “RasoolAllah came and brought several others with him. They all sat in the shade. Then RasoolAllah said Salam and asked for permission to enter and he came inside our house. Beforehand I had told my wife that RasoolAllah will be coming close to afternoon time and he should not see you, and do not cause the Messenger of Allah () to suffer for any reason and do not try to speak to him.

Then I prepared for him a bed and provided a pillow, then he put his head down on the pillow and slept. At that time I had a baby goat which was raised in our house and was fat, healthy and had a lot of flesh on it. So I said to my slave to slaughter this baby goat and make it fast before the Prophet awakens and I am with you. So we put ourselves to that work and when we had finished it RasoolAllah () was still sleeping.

Jabir said “When RasoolAllah () will wake up, he will ask for water to do wudu’ and I fear he will leave soon afterwards. It is for this reason that I want that the meat be prepared for RasoolAllah () before he finishes making wudu’.

When RasoolAllah () woke up he said ” O Jabir ! Bring water for me” I said ” Yes! I am bringing it.” Before he finished the wudu’, the meat was laid before him. He looked at me. Then he said “It seems as if you know that I like meat” Then he said, call Abu Bakr. Then I summoned his companions.

Jabir said “Food was brought in front of  RasoolAllah () and he laid his hands on them and said: “Say Bismillah and eat”. Then they ate until they were satisfied and there was still a lot of meat left.

Jabir said” By Allah! The people of Banu Salama were watching them. And RasoolAllah () was more dearer to them than their own lives. And they did not come close to RasoolAllah () as they did not want to harm him () in anyway (by words or action).

Then he got up, and his companions got up and they walked in front of him. Then he () said: ‘Leave my back for the angels.’ Jabir said “I followed him such that I came to the threshold of the door. And then my wife peeped from behind the door and she was a very veiling woman. She said ” O Messenger of Allah! Pray to Allah for me and my husband.”  He said: ‘May Allah have mercy on you and your husband.’

Then RasoolAllah () said ” Bring فُلان man to me” Here it is the lender who was asking me to pay of the debt immediately. Then he said to him: “From what Jabir’s father owed you, postpone a part of the debt and allow Jabir to repay it in the next harvest season” He said “I cannot do this.” and he tried to present different excuses and said this money is for orphans.

RasoolAllah () said:”Where is Jabir?” Jabir said ‘O the Messenger of Allah! I am here.’ RasoolAllah () said “Measure for him from Ajwa’ dates. It may be that Allah makes it sufficient”. Then he raised his head towards the sky and saw the sun had just set. He spoke “O Abu Bakr! Prayer (maghrib)”.

Jabir said “Then they all went towards the mosque and I said to the creditor to bring his basket. Then I weighed for him Ajwa’ dates and they came to be sufficient by the will of Allah and there still remained some dates. So I went running to the Messenger of Allahtowards the mosque like a spark of fire. I found him in such a state that he had just finished praying.

So Jabir said, ‘O the Messenger of Allah! when I measured the dates for my creditor, Allah made it sufficient. Even after that such and such amount of dates is left for us.’ So RasoolAllah () said ” Where is Umar bin Khattab?” (Hearing the call) He came running. The Messenger of Allah () said to him: ‘Ask Jabir ibn Abdullah about his debts and dates.’ He said ‘I will not ask him. As when you said to him ‘It may be that Allah makes it sufficient’. I felt confident that Allah will certainly suffice him. He () repeated to him three times to ask jabir about his debts and dates. And Umar replied the same three times that he will not ask.

Jabir said ‘Whenever RasoolAllah () had to repeat something he didn’t do it more than three time. So finally Umar asked me “What was the outcome of your lender and the dates?” I said ” Allah fulfilled my dues and there is still left such and such amount of dates.

Jabir said “Then I went home to my wife and said ‘Didn’t I forbid you to speak with the Messenger of Allah () in my house?” She answered “Do you think that if Allah brought his Messenger to my house, then I will not even ask him to pray (welfare) for myself and my husband?
