Chapter on the period of Jahiliyyah and misguidance of the people before the dawn of Prophet Muahammad (ﷺ)
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ , عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ ، رَضِيَ الله عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَجُلٌ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَيُؤَاخَذُ الرَّجُلُ بِمَا عَمِلَ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ ؟ قَالَ : مَنْ أَحْسَنَ فِي الإِسْلاَمِ لَمْ يُؤَاخَذْ بِمَا كَانَ عَمِلَ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ ، وَمَنْ أَسَاءَ فِي الإِسْلاَمِ أُخِذَ بِالأَوَّلِ وَالآخِرِ
It is reported that ‘Abdullah (ibn Mas’ud, may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Once a man came to the Messenger of Allah , peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and said:” O Messenger of Allah, will he be punished for what he did during the time of the Jahiliyya?” He (ﷺ) said: “The one who does good deeds in Islam will not be asked for what he did during the time of the jahiliyya, and the one who does bad deeds in Islam (( This refers to apostates )) will be asked for both the first and the last. (( In other words, he will be punished for everything.))
