It is reported that Abu Sa’id said: “Once, when we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), a woman came to him and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! My husband Safwan ibn al-Mu’attal [1]  beats me when I pray, makes me break my fast when I fast, and does the morning prayer only after sunrise! ” And Safwan was sitting with him at that time. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) asked him about this, and Safwan said: “O Messenger of Allah, as for her words ‘He hits me when I pray’, she reads two suras, although I forbade her to ”. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:  “One sura is enough for people.”… Safwan continued: “As for her words ‘He makes me break the fast,’ she starts fasting, and I am young and cannot restrain myself.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:  “A woman should not fast without the permission of her husband . ” Safwan continued: “As for her words ‘Does the morning prayer only after sunrise’, our whole family is known for not waking up before sunrise.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:  “When you wake up, then pray.”… This hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud 2459. It is also quoted by Ibn Hibban 1488, al-Hakim 1/602 and Ahmad 3/80 with a sahih isnad that meets the requirements of al-Bukhari and Muslim. Classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani in Irwa’ al-Ghaleel, 7/65  See also Silsila al-ahadith al-sahiha 1/680.
