«إذا أحب الله عبدا حماه في الدنيا كما يحمي أحدكم سقيمه الماء» .

It is reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
‘When Allah loves a slave, He prevents him from the world, just as one of you prevents his sick from water.’
This hadith was narrated by at-Tirmidhi 2036, al-Hakim 4/207 and al-Bayhakyi in Shu’ab al-iman 10448 from the words of Qatada ibn Nu’man.
Sheikh al-Albani called the hadith authentic. See Sahih al-jami ‘as-saghir 280, Mishkat al-Masabih 5250.

“If Allah loves some of His slaves, He protects him from the world” – that is, He protects him from earthly pleasures and from its deception, due to him being honored with high status in the hereafter. That is, He becomes a barrier between them, alienating him from this and making it difficult to acquire this.
“How any of you protects your patient from water” – that is, from drinking, if it hurts him. For certain diseases, doctors forbid drinking water. See “Tukhfatul-ahwazi”.
