أتاني جبريل بالحمى والطاعون فأمسكت الحمى بالمدينة وأرسلت الطاعون إلى الشام فالطاعون شهادة لأمتي ورحمة لهم ورجس على الكافرين
(حم ابن سعد) عن أبي عسيب)
It is reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:
“Jibril came to me (and brought with him) fever and plague. I kept the fever in Medina, and sent the plague to al-Sham. The plague is martyrdom and mercy for members of my ummah and an abomination [1] for infidels. “
This hadith was transmitted by Ahmad 5/81 and Ibn Sa’d from the words of Abu ‘Usayb.
[1] That is, punishment.
Also in al-Silsila as-sahiha 761. Sheikh al-Albani called the hadith authentic.
