Sahih al-Jami ‘as-Saghir Hadith No. 474

By almaas Feb 20, 2022

474 The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is reported to have said:

“If a man has intercourse with his wife and tires, let him wash away what befell him from his wife and then perform ablution (wudu ).” This hadeeth was narrated by Ahmad 5/114, al-Bukhari 293 and Muslim 346 from the words of Ubayy ibn Ka’b.

Sheikh al-Albani called the hadeeth authentic. See Sahih al-Jami’ as-Saghir 474.

474 ( صحيح )

إذا جامع الرجل امرأته ثم أكسل فليغسل ما أصاب المرأة منه ثم ليتوضأ

( حم ق ) عن أبي بن كعب

Note: This hadith is abrogated by other ahadith mentioned below.

In the early period of Islam, it was not necessary to bathe after sexual intercourse.

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri said: “Once the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent for a man from among the Ansar, and when he appeared, drops of water flowed from his head. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Obviously, we made you hurry.” He said: “Yes.” Then the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “If you were rushed or did not ejaculate during intercourse, you should only perform a small wudu (wudu).” al-Bukhari 180, Muslim 343.

However, later this provision was canceled by another command of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): “If one of you sits between four (parts of) women and penetrates the vagina, then he is obliged to bathe.” al-Bukhari 291, Muslim 348.

By “four” we are talking about two arms and legs, as it is said in an-Nihaya.
As for the concept of “introducing a penis”, which violates ghusl, then the prophet himself, may Allah bless him and welcome him, pointed out this, saying:

“If two circumcised (male and female genital organs) touch and the head of the penis enters, then bathing becomes mandatory regardless of whether there was an ejaculation or not!” at-Tabarani in “al-Awsat” 1/9. Hadith is good. See Sahih al-Jami’ as-Saghir 386.

Imam al-Baghawi said: “The performance of ghusl from sexual defilement becomes obligatory for two reasons: the insertion of the head into the sexual organ, or the release of the seed, both from the man and from the woman.” See Sharh-us-Sunnah 1/11.
