It is reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“When one of you leads the people in prayer he should be brief[1], for among them are the young and the old, the weak and those who have needs to attend to. But if he prays by himself he may pray as he wishes.”
This hadith was narrated by Ahmad 2/271, al-Bukhari 703, Muslim 467, at-Tirmidhi 236 from the words of Abu Huraira.
Sheikh al-Albani called the hadith authentic. See Sahih al-Jami ‘as-saghir 391.
