«إذا ابتلى الله العبد المسلم ببلاء في جسده قال الله عز وجل: أكتب له صالح عمله فإن شفاه غسله وطهره وإن قبضه غفر له ورحمه» .

It is narrated from the words of Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“If Allah afflicts a Muslim slave with a bodily illness then Allah the Great and Almighty says (to the angels) “Write down for him his righteous deeds which he was accustomed to” Then if God cures him He washes and cleanses him [from sins], and if He takes him in death He forgives him and shows mercy to him.“
This hadith was narrated by Ahmad 3/258.
Sheikh al-Albani called the hadith good. See Saheeh al-jami ‘as-saghir 258.
