It is reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“Give her to her aunt on the mother’s side, for verily, the mother’s aunt is (like) the mother.”
This hadith was narrated by al-Hakim 4614 from the words of ‘Ali.
Sheikh al-Albani called the hadith authentic. See Saheeh al-jami ‘as-saghir 248.

This hadith deals with the litigation waged by ‘Ali ibn Abu Talib, Zayd ibn Harith and Ja’far ibn Abu Talib over the daughter of the Prophet’s uncle (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) Hamza ibn’ Abdul-Muttalib, who became a shahid in the battle of Uhud. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) decided to place the girl in the care of Ja’far, who was married to her aunt on her mother’s side who will take care of her like her mother.
