Abdullah bin ‘Amr narrated:

The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) came out to us with two books in his hand. And he said: ‘Do you know what these two books are?’ He said about the one that was in his right hand: ‘This is a book from the Lord of the worlds, in it are the names of the people of Paradise, and the name of their fathers and their tribes and so on until the very end (of their family tree), there being no addition to them nor deduction from them forever.’ Then he said about the one that was in his left: ‘This is a book from the Lord of the worlds, in it are the names of the people of Fire, and the name of their fathers and their tribes and so on until the very end (of their family tree), there being no addition to them nor deduction from them forever. Then he said “Stick to the right one [1] and draw nearer (to good deeds), for indeed the inhabitant of Paradise, his life will end indulging in the affairs of the inhabitants of Paradise. And indeed the inhabitant of Fire, whatever his work may have been in the past, his end will be indulging in the affairs of the inhabitants of Hell. Your Lord completed (the work) of His slaves: “One part of the people will be in Paradise, and the other part will be in the Flame”

 (Sura al-Shura 42: 7). This hadith was transmitted by Ahmad 2/167, al-Tirmidhi 2141, al-Nasai in the “Sunan al-Kubra” 11473, Ibn Abu ‘Asim in the “al-Sunnah” 348, Abu Nu’aym in the “Hilyatul-auliya” 5/168 -169.

Sheikh al-Albani called the hadith authentic. See “Sahih al-jami ‘as-sagir” 88, “al-Silsil as-sahiha” 848.
