Preoccupying Oneself with the Shortcomings of Others.
‘Awn bin ‘Abd-Allāh [may Allāh have mercy on him] said:
“I do not believe; that one occupies them-self, with pursuing the deficiencies of others; except due to heedlessness, which has made him heedless of himself [i.e. his own shortcomings].”

[may Allāh preserve him] said:
“He [‘Awn], may Allāh have mercy on him, has spoken the truth. From among the people there are those who search for the [small] speck [of dirt] in his brother’s eye while ignoring the tree trunk [large speck of dirt] in his own. Perhaps he may wake up having missed the dawn prayer in congregation; yet he is most concerned with tracking the defects in others.”
