Sahih Al Jami As Saghir Hadith No. 359

By almaas Dec 26, 2020

«إذا أعطيت شيئا من غير أن تسأل فكل وتصدق» .
(صحيح) … [م د ن] عن عمر. الإرواء 862، المشكاة 1854)

It is reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

” When you are given anything without your begging for it, (then accept it), eat it and give it in charity.”

This hadith was narrated by Muslim 1045, Abu Dawood 1647 and al-Nasai 5/102 from the words of ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab.

Sheikh al-Albani called the hadith authentic. See Saheeh al-jami ‘as-saghir 359.

Comment

In the hadith of Muslim 1045 it comes that Ibn ‘Umar never begged anything from anyone, nor refused anything given to him.

This serves as a refutation to the Indo-Pak Subcontinent culture of people denying gifts given to them. Although in their heart they eagerly desire it or may refuse due to pride. This pretentious attitude is seen as good manners and encouraged among small children when they are given gifts by relatives, although it is contrary to sunnah. It may even lead to self pride being cultivated in the minds of small children without parents realizing it.

The matter is serious as in other ahadith it comes:

He who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of pride shall not enter Paradise. – Sahih Muslim
