It is reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“When you come to your wife, be wise about sexual intercourse.[1]”
This hadith was narrated by al-Khatib al-Baghdadi 6741 from the words of Jabir.
Sheikh al-Albani called the hadith authentic. See Sahih al-jami ‘as-saghir 273, al-Silsilah al-sahiha 1190.

[1] Perhaps these words should be understood as an indication of the need to control oneself, despite the long separation, and not to have sexual intercourse with his wife if her period has not ended [‘Aini. ‘Umdat].
Ibn al-A’rabi said: “Qays means jima ‘(sexual intercourse) and also’ akl (reason). [Saying this, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) encouraged [Jabir] to strive for procreation ”[al-Nawawi. Minhaj].
