احجج عن أبيك واعتمر
(صحيح) … [د] عن أبي رزين. المشكاة 2528)

It is reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Perform Hajj and Umrah on (behalf of) your father.”

This hadith was narrated by Abu Daud (1810), at-Tirmidhi (930), al-Nasai (5/111) from the words of Abu Razin, may Allah be pleased with him.

At-Tirmidhi said: “Good authentic hadith.”

Sheikh al-Albani called the hadith authentic. See Sahih al-Jami ‘as-saghir (188), Sahih Abi Daud (1588), Mishkatul Masabih (2528).

Grade: صحيح

A Muslim is allowed to perform Hajj in place of another person.

It is reported that (once) Abu Razin, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “O Messenger of Allah, truly, my father is a deep old man who is unable to perform either Hajj, Umrah, or (any other) journey” – (and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Perform Hajj and Umrah on (behalf of) your father.” Abu Dawud (1810), at-Tirmidhi (930). The hadith is authentic. See Sahih Abi Daud (1588).

It is reported that ‘Abdullah ibn’ Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, said:

“(When) al-Fadl [1] was riding behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), a women of the tribe of Khath’am came up .. and said: ‘O Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ), Allaah’s commandment that His servants should perform Hajj has come when my father is an old man and is unable to sit firmly on a Camel. May I perform Hajj on his behalf? He said “Yes”, that was at the Farewell Pilgrimage. al-Bukhari (1513), Muslim (1334).

However, a person is first obliged to perform Hajj for himself before doing it for another.

It is narrated from the words of Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that (one day) the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), having heard (during the Hajj) one person say: “Labbayk (always ready to obey) on behalf of Shubrumah. He asked: Who is Shubrumah? He replied: A brother or relative of mine. He asked: Have you performed hajj on your own behalf? He said: No. He said: perform hajj on your own behalf, then perform it on behalf of Shubrumah.

This hadith was narrated by Abu Daud (1811), Ibn Majah (2903), ad-Darakutni (2678). See Sunan ad-Darakutni (2/517), Sahih Abi Daud (1589), Irwa-ul-galil (994).
