أتيت ليلة أسري بي على قوم تقرض شفاههم بمقاريض من نار كلما قرضت وفت1, فقلت: يا جبريل من هؤلاء؟ قال: خطباء أمتك الذين يقولون ما لا يفعلون ويقرءون كتاب الله ولا يعملون بت

It is reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
“On the night when I was ascended into heaven, I came to people who had their lips cut out with fiery scissors. Each time they were cut off, they (again) healed. I asked: “O Jibril, who are they?” And he replied: “These are preachers from your community who say what they themselves do not act upon, they read the Book of Allah, but do not act in accordance with it.”
This hadith was narrated by al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Iman (1773) from the words of Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him. Abu Ya’la in Musnad 4106
