It is reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“ I fear six things for you: the reign of foolish rulers; (unjust) shedding of blood; selling judgments[1] ; breaking family ties; when Quran is taken as something to be sang[2] ; a large number of (unjust) assistants to the rulers [3] ”.

This hadith was narrated by Ahmad (3/494) and at-Tabarani in al-Mu’jam al-Kabir (18/57) from the words of ‘Auf ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him.

Sheikh al-Albani called the hadith authentic. See Sahih al-Jami ‘as-saghir (216), al-Silsilah al-sahiha (979).

Grade: صحيح

[1] This refers to passing judgments by courts and councils by receiving bribes. See “Faydul-Qadir”.

[2] Hafiz Ibn Kathir said: “The Shariah requires reading the Quran in a beautiful, measured voice, which will entail meditation and understanding of the Quran, humility and a desire to obey its orders. As for the newly invented song voices, which are similar to an entertaining and musical rhythm, the Koran rejects this and strictly warns against this kind of reading. And the Sunnah mentions strict texts regarding such reading! ” See “Fadail al-Quran” 19.

Imam ‘Abdu-r-Rauf al-Munawi, who died more than four hundred years ago, said: “And it has become widespread at this time.” See “Faydul-Qadir” (1/194).

[3] This refers to unjust police and government officials who use their rank to oppress the downtrodden, take bribes, usurp wealth of people unjustly etc.
