A Series of Reminders About The Month of Ramaḍān – No.32

‎A Principle Concerning Breaking The Fast For A Legitimate Reason Which Then No Longer Exists

Shaykh Muḥammad Ṣāliḥ al-‘Uthaymīn رحمه الله mentioned: “And the principle concerning the strongest position regarding this issue (i.e. a person breaking their fast for a legitimate reason and then the reason no longer exists), is that whoever breaks his fast in Ramaḍān due to an excuse which allows breaking the fast and then the reason for his breaking the fast is removed or ceases to exist, (but it is still daylight,) then it is not compulsory for the person to refrain from that which is prohibited during fasting, (i.e. food, drink, or sexual intercourse, etc.) for the remaining portion of that day.

● [الشرح الممتع ج. ٢، ص. ٣٣٦]

Mālik and Ash Shāfi’ī stated: “and he can continue not fasting.” (i.e. for the remainder of that day even if the reason for him breaking the fast no longer exists) as was mentioned by Ibn Rushd in Bidāyatul Mujtahid.“
