Sahih al-jami ‘as-sagir Hadith No. 91

Narrated Abu Hurairah:

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Leave me with what I left you [1]. When I narrated a Hadith to you, then take it from me. The people before you were only destroyed by their excessive questioning and disagreeing with their Prophets.”

This hadeeth was transmitted by at-Tirmizi 2679. Sheikh al-Albani called the hadeeth authentic. See “Sahih al-jami ‘as-sagir” 91, “al-Silsil as-sahiha” 850.

[1] That is, do not ask the prophet about the insignificant and what does not concern your religion, since such questions can lead to the fact that you would be obligated to the obligation that was previously optional.

ad-Daraqutnee gives another version of this hadith, which says: “ And after the ayah was revealed, which says:

“O you who believe! Ask not about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble. But if you ask about them while the Quran is being revealed, they will be made plain to you. Allah has forgiven that, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Forbearing”

[al-Maa’idah 5:101].

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Verily Allah ta’ala has laid down religious obligations (fara’id), so do not neglect them; and He has set limits, so do not overstep them; and He has forbidden some things, so do not violate them; and He has remained silent about some things, out of compassion for you, not forgetfulness — so do not seek after them.
