It is reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him, said: “Gabriel came to me and commanded me to order my Companions to raise their voices when pronouncing Talbiyya [1] .”

This hadith was transmitted by Malik to al-Muwatt 1/334, Ahmad 4/56, Abu Dawood 1814, al-Tirmidhi 829, al-Nasai 5/162, Ibn Majah 2922, Ibn Hibban 3803, al-Hakim 1/450, al-Baihakyi 5/41 according to Saib ibn al-Khalad.

Sheikh al-Albani called the hadith authentic. See “Sahih al-jami ‘as-sagir” 62, “Sahih at-targib wa-t-tarhib” 1135, “Mishkat al-masabih” 2549.

[1] Talbiyah is repeatedly invoked during the Hajj, or pilgrimage, upon putting on the Ihram, so the pilgrims can purify and rid themselves of worldly concerns.

The text of the Talbiyah is:

Transliteration: labbayka -llāhumma labbayka, labbayka lā šarīka laka labbayka, ʾinna -l-ḥamda wa-n-niʿmata laka wa-l-mulka lā šarīka laka
