The verse establishes that fasting had been made obligatory for earlier believers, and that the aim behind it is to open their hearts to God and make them more conscious of Him. This, then, is the principal objective of fasting: to be God- fearing, or taqwā. Fasting, when observed in obedience to God and in pursuit of His pleasure, instils and revives this quality in the human heart and acts as a safeguard against evil and wrongdoing. True believers know and appreciate the value of being God-fearing in God’s sight. Hence, they constantly seek to enhance their sense of it. Fasting is a means to achieve just that.

Allaah says in the Quran:
“Allah has promised to the believers -men and women, – Gardens under which rivers flow to dwell therein forever, and beautiful mansions in Gardens of ‘Adn (Eden Paradise). But the greatest bliss is the Good Pleasure of Allah. That is the supreme success.” [Surah At-Tawbah, Q9 :72]
“Close friends will be enemies to one another on that Day, except the righteous, ˹who will be told,˺ “O My servants! There is no fear for you Today, nor will you grieve— ˹those˺ who believed in Our signs and ˹fully˺ submitted ˹to Us˺. Enter Paradise, you and your spouses, rejoicing.” Golden trays and cups will be passed around to them. There will be whatever the souls desire and the eyes delight in. And you will be there forever. That is the Paradise which you will be awarded for what you used to do.” [Surah Az-Zukhruf, Q43 :67-72]
