قال الإمام النووي رحمه الله:

بلغنا أن قس بن ساعدة، وأكثم بن صيفي اجتمعنا فقال أحدهما لصاحبه:

كم وجدت في ابن آدم من العيوب؟

فقال: هي أكثر من أن تحصى، والذي أحصيته : ثمانية آلاف عيب ، فوجدت خصلةً إن استعملتها سترت العيوب كلها، قال: ما هي؟

قال: حفظ اللسان

Al-Imām an-Nawawi [may Allāh have mercy on him] said:

“It has reached us that Quss bin Sā’idah and Aktham bin Sayfi met and one of the two said to his companion:

‘How many faults were you able to find in the son of Ādam?’

The other replied: ‘They are too numerous to count, [however], the faults that I was able to account for numbered eight thousand. I also realised one thing if put into practice, all of these faults would remain concealed.’ He enquired: ‘What is it?’

He replied: *‘Guarding the tongue!’*”
