Question: “Is there a difference between the al-ʿaqīdah and al-manhaj?”

س: هل هناك فرق بين العقيدة والمنهج؟

Answer: al-Manhaj (ie: the methodology of the people of Sunnah) is more general [and or broader] than the ʿaqīdah;

جـ/ المنهج أعم من العقيدة،

The methodology is in ʿaqīdah (ie: creed) and in al-sulūk (ie: the mannerisms) and in al-akhlāq (ie: the character) and in the muʿamalāt (ie: mutual relations and business transactions) in the life of every Muslim and in every field in which the Muslim traverses is called al-manhaj.

المنهج يكون في العقيدة وفي السلوك والأخلاق والمعاملات وفي كل حياة المسلم، كل الخِطة التي يسير عليها المسلم تسمى المنهج.

As for al-ʿaqīdah, then what is intended by it, is the foundation of īmān (ie: what the Muslim believes) and the meaning of the shahādatayn (ie: testification that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and Muḥammad is His Messenger) and that which it comprises of and this is what is meant by al-ʿaqīdah.

أما العقيدة فيراد بها أصل الإيمان، ومعنى الشهادتين ومقتضاهما هذه هي العقيدة.
