It is reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Leave me alone, O ‘Umar! Indeed, I was given a choice, and I chose (prayer), because I was told: “ Whether you ask for forgiveness for them or don’t do it, (and even) if you ask seventy times for their forgiveness, Allah will not forgive them ” [1 ] And if I knew that if I added to the seventy they would be forgiven, I would add! ”

This hadith was narrated by at-Tirmidhi 3097 and al-Nasai 4/67 from the words of ‘Umar.

Sheikh al-Albani called the hadith authentic. See Sahih al-Jami ‘as-saghir 227, al-Silsilah al-sahiha 1131.

Grade: صحيح

____________________________

This hadith is about the case when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) decided to perform a funeral prayer over ‘Abdullah ibn Ubay ibn Salul, who was called the head of the hypocrites of Medina. ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, wanted to dissuade the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) from this, listing what he said behind the back of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and his companions, however, The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) refused to heed the words of ‘Umar.
