It is reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“The parts of land dearest to Allah are its mosques, and the parts most hateful to Allah are markets.”
This hadith was narrated by Muslim (671) from the words of Abu Huraira; Ahmad (4/81) and al-Hakim (2/7) according to Jubair ibn Mut’im, may Allah be pleased with them.
The hadith is authentic. See Sahih al-Jami ‘as-sagyir (167), Sahih at-Targib wa-t-tarhib (324), Mukhtasar Muslim (241), Mishkatul-Masabih (696).
The reason is that, in the markets people most often deceive each other, engage in usury and do other inappropriate things, and moreover, they least remember Allah in markets.
