It is reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“The parts of land dearest to Allah are its mosques, and the parts most hateful to Allah are markets.” [1]
This hadith was narrated by Muslim (671) from the words of Abu Huraira; Ahmad (4/81) and al-Hakim (2/7) according to Jubair ibn Mut’im, may Allah be pleased with them.
The hadith is authentic. See Sahih al-Jami ‘as-sagyir (167), Sahih at-Targib wa-t-tarhib (324), Mukhtasar Muslim (241), Mishkatul-Masabih (696).
[1] The reason is that, in the markets people most often deceive each other, engage in usury and do other inappropriate things, and moreover, they least remember Allah in markets.
